Welch Spring & Co Rosewood Weight Regulator Shelf Clock Here is a RARE Welch Spring & Co oversized Rosewood Weight Driven regulator Shelf Clock. Don't jump to the Tran books as you will not find it. It was not cataloged in this exact form. I will explain where to find it later in the listing. The Case is Rosewood with a framework similar to the large No. 5 Calendar Regulator. This model is unmarked, and not named with no Label (never had one), it also has no Movement, or Dial markings. It was built in both Spring and Weight Driven forms by the Welch Spring Co. The Clock is a substantial 42 1/2 inches tall by 19 inches wide. The Case is all Rosewood including the Finials. It has all original finish, It came out of an attic and I just wiped off some loose surface dust, it has not been cleaned. It has the original Flocked backboard. This is not a wall clock with a missing Pediment, it never had a hanger. The painted Dial is original and unmarked and has an inset Alarm Mechanism. The Dial is 10 inches with a little lower edge paint loss and very stable. The Movement is Birge Strap Brass Weight Driven, similar to Ives with an offset Escapement. Welch Spring bought their early movements from Birge. It is correct and original to the case, grungy, never cleaned since day one, but after I put a drop of oil on each pivot I found that it runs and strikes fine. It sis coupled to a Spring Driven Alarm Movement. The Clock has an all original Case, Movement, Dial, Pendulum and Bob and an original upper Glass and lower flaking Mirror with the old Orange Shalack backing. It has original Long square 8 Day Weights and is in running order. References I found two examples of this clock, one by Horton's listed in 2003, you can find that on Antiqueclockspriceguide dot com. Search for "Welch Spring and Co.", it will be the third clock in the third row on the second page. William Janek sold one, missing the finials and with a replaced crest on Nov 16, 2003. It was estimated at $2,400 to $4,000. This clock also had the same Birge Strap Brass Movement. Also reference Ly Welch Clocks book. Thi shows the same case with a Spring movement on page 180, Figure 410A. Reference Figure 106 & 107 in this Book. Those show the Welch Spring Calendar model using this same Movement. Discrepancies & Notations My first few photos are a little dark, i took them outdoors in bright sun and the shutter stopped down too far. Every antique of this age shows some agin and defects, this one is a really good original. What I find on the case is one minor wood dent, jsut below the top door, The Finials are orignal and have losses at the tips. One has a couple edge chips, one has and old chip reglued. There is a repair to the left Crest top molding where it fell apart with the grain. Some of the miter joints aren't as tightly glued as they could be. All for the Dial Board and Dial Screw holes line up correctly, there are no extra mounting holes in the case, no evidence of anything being changed. I do not a round drilled hole just below the dail in the Dial backer board. It's too big for mounting anything, about all that I could think of it's purpose being is that it was put there a long time ago so that something could be inserted to silence the Gong. I replaced the Screws that hold the Dial Board to the movement uprights as two were missing and the other two were a hodge poge. I found the hands in the bottom of the case, the hand Nut was missing. I put them back on using a modern miniature hex nut. The Minute hand may not be original, if it is, it's different than other Welch clocks that I've seen. One of the vertical wood strips that holds the lower mirror glass in is missing. I will either replace it or pull the mirror for shipping. The Mirror itself has a lot of flaking, I like the character myself, but you may not. This appears to be a very honest nad handsome clock, you could make it talk if you spit shined the case, but I will leave that up to choice. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. As long as the listing remains open with no bids, I reserve the right to sell it via and venue that I choose. Once there is a bid, it will remain as an auction with no cancelation or erly sell out. I will send Tacking information through Paypal when I ship your item. Payment and Shipping: I have specified shipping method in the listing. It doesn't mean that is cast in concrete. I do not like using UPS due to my experience rough handling and their automatic denial of claims, at times with oversize there isn't much choice. I prefer using Priority Mail is it is fast and minimal handling. Sometimes Priority does not make economic sense as USPS charges by Dimensional Weight and cross country Priority Shipping can get quite expensive on alarge but light items. I try to specify what I think is in my customers best interest. You are welcome to ask for a different method, but please do that before you use Paypal. I frequently have the Postage Prepaid and the item on the way the same or next business day. I will combine multiple purchases for shipping to the buyers best advantage . Sales Tax : Any item shipped, delivered, or picked up within New York State is subject to an 8.00% Sales Tax. I will accept a completely and properly filled out exemption certificate form ST-120 dated 6/99. No taxable item will be shipped until the Sales Tax requirements are completed. In the unlikely event that I miss explaining a major defect the time limit is 3 Days after receipt to notify me, no exceptions. I will not accept returns on anything that has been taken apart or altered by the Buyer. If you fail to read the entire listing or look at all of the photos it is NOT a reason for a return.
